Deputy Speaker Calls For Peace And Stability In Gaza and Beyond At Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference

During the General Assembly of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) in Barbados, held as part of the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, Deputy Speaker David Agius delivered a powerful speech addressing the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and other war-affected regions.
Deputy Speaker Agius highlighted the recent positive developments in Gaza, including the agreement on a ceasefire and the return of hostages. He commended all parties working towards a resolution, describing these steps as crucial first moves towards lasting and sustainable peace in Gaza and the broader Middle East.

However, he stressed that these developments come after two years of violence, including the killing of innocent civilians, with a blatant disregard for human rights and international humanitarian law.
Addressing fellow Commonwealth parliamentarians, who represent one-third of the world’s population, Deputy Speaker Agius urged them to “stand up and be counted” when faced with such challenging global events. He called on the Commonwealth to be a voice of peace and stability in Gaza, Ukraine, and other conflict-stricken regions.
He further emphasised that solidarity should extend beyond Commonwealth nations and encouraged active support for the peace process in Gaza, aiming for a two-state solution in which Palestinians and Israelis live side by side in peace.
At the CPA General Assembly, parliamentarians also discussed governance, constitutional amendments, membership matters, financial statements, and motions raised by CPA branches. The Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians elected Catherine Fife (Canada – Ontario Branch) as their new Chair.
The Maltese delegation included David Agius, Davina Sammut Hili, and Graziella Attard Previ, representing Malta in these important discussions.
