Decorating Earlier for Christmas Makes People Happier, Study Finds

If you have already been eyeing up the Christmas decorations, here is a little encouragement: getting into the festive spirit early could give your mood a welcome boost.
While there is no definitive proof that putting your tree up earlier automatically makes you happier, experts suggest the nostalgia and anticipation associated with Christmas can bring positive feelings.
According to psychotherapist Amy Morin, decorations can remind us of happy moments spent with family and friends. From unpacking familiar ornaments to switching on the fairy lights, these traditions can help us reconnect with memories we treasure. Starting earlier could simply mean enjoying those feelings for longer.
The excitement of having something to look forward to may also play a part. Decorating can become a way of embracing the coming celebrations, bringing a little colour and comfort into everyday life before December even arrives.
There could even be a social benefit. Research published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology found that Christmas decorations outside a home can make its residents appear friendlier and more sociable.
Of course, Christmas brings different emotions for everyone, and there is no perfect date to start celebrating.
But if putting up your tree in November makes you smile, there is certainly no need to wait for the calendar to catch up.
Are you team “straight after Halloween” or “wait until December”?
