Authorities and wildlife experts are urging the public to stay away from a dead whale in Comino after the carcass was discovered earlier today on the beach.

According to the Maltese conservation organisation Nature Trust – FEE Malta, the situation was first reported early in the morning by the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA).

Following the alert, a joint assessment was immediately launched to determine how the whale can be safely removed.

Over the past several hours, specialists from Nature Trust worked alongside veterinarian Dr Gruppetta and officials from the Environment & Resources Authority to evaluate the situation and identify the safest method to handle the carcass.

Authorities have stressed that the public must keep their distance from the whale and avoid touching it under any circumstances.

“Whales are mammals just like us, and there are conditions that could be transmissible,” Nature Trust warned, explaining that the cause of death has not yet been determined.

Until further investigations are carried out, contact with the carcass could pose a potential health risk.

Officials are currently coordinating efforts to remove the carcass as soon as possible in order to eliminate any potential hazard in the area.

Members of the public visiting Comino are therefore being asked to stay away from the site and cooperate with authorities while the situation is being handled.
