Labour MEP Dr Daniel Attard led an official European Parliament delegation to Malaysia for a high-level visit focused on strengthening trade and strategic cooperation with the Southeast Asian country.

During the visit to Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak, Attard held meetings with Malaysia’s House of Representatives Speaker, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. The delegation also met Sarawak’s Deputy Premier, the EU Ambassador and ambassadors from EU Member States.

Discussions focused on trade and investment, as well as cooperation in areas including clean energy, transport, telecommunications, education and artificial intelligence.

The visit comes as EU-Malaysia trade approaches €50 billion annually and both sides continue working towards a free trade agreement aimed at expanding market access and creating new investment opportunities.

The delegation also met representatives from major multinational companies, including Airbus, BMW, Ericsson, Stellantis and STMicroelectronics, to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing European businesses in the region.

Meetings with civil society organisations addressed issues related to human rights and sustainability, while a visit to Universiti Teknologi MARA’s campus and its Erasmus+ centre focused on education and research cooperation.

Attard said stronger partnerships with countries such as Malaysia are important as Europe seeks to diversify its trading relationships and reduce economic dependencies. He added that closer cooperation could create new opportunities for businesses and workers, including those in Malta.
