Damaged Marsascala Promenade Arches Demolished For Safer Rebuild

The Ombudsman has ascertained that the works being carried out were indeed required urgently to eliminate danger to the public. These works follow procedures as established by law under the Planning, Transport, Environment and Cultural Heritage Acts.

The arches beneath the Marsascala promenade, a recognised feature of the town’s coastline, have been demolished in recent weeks as part of works aimed at addressing serious structural safety concerns.
For many years, the promenade was partially supported by a series of arches leading down to the quay.
Continuous exposure to sea erosion and weathering led to significant deterioration, leaving the structures in poor condition and raising concerns about public safety.
Infrastructure Malta determined that both the arches and the quay had become structurally unsafe and posed a risk to people using the promenade above.
Following technical assessments, the decision was taken to remove the deteriorated arches to allow the promenade to be rebuilt on more stable foundations anchored directly onto the rock below.

The works are intended to eliminate existing hazards and improve the long term stability of the promenade. Rebuilding the structure on secure foundations will help prevent further damage linked to erosion and ensure a safer environment for pedestrians and visitors.
The demolition of the arches will not result in their permanent loss. Infrastructure Malta has confirmed that the arches will be reconstructed following the completion of the foundational works.
The reconstruction will follow the original configuration, preserving the familiar appearance of the promenade while ensuring it meets modern safety standards.
Once completed, the project is expected to deliver a safer and more resilient promenade, maintaining Marsascala’s coastal character while placing public safety at the forefront.
