Cutajar And Dalli Criticise Publication Of Intimate Details About Miriam Azzopardi's Murder

Labour MP Rosianne Cutajar and former European Commissioner Helena Dalli have both spoken out against the publication of intimate details about the final hours of the recently murdered Miriam Azzopardi.
Azzopardi, a 47-year-old mother of three from St Paul’s Bay, was found dead in a field in Marsa last week, with police subsequently treating her death as murder.
Writing on Facebook, Cutajar said she was “disappointed and, to a certain extent, angry” at the way personal details concerning the victim were being reported. She questioned whether some of the information being circulated was genuinely in the public interest or whether it was being sensationalised to generate clicks and views.
Bringing up journalistic ethics, Cutajar said that, while journalists have a responsibility to present and report on information, they must not compromise the dignity or privacy of the people involved.
Dalli raised a similar concern, stressing that “even the dead have a right to dignity,” especially when the victim cannot speak up for themselves or share their version of events.
