Labour MP Cressida Galea has been re-elected to Parliament after securing a final tally of 2,094 votes in Malta’s First Electoral District.

Announcing the result on social media, Galea thanked voters for their support, stating that she had been elected from the First District with a final result of more than 2,000 votes.

She expressed gratitude to those who supported, encouraged and believed in her throughout the electoral campaign, adding that her parliamentary work would continue on behalf of her constituents.

The result marks an increase from the 1,540 votes Galea obtained in the 2022 general election, representing growth of more than 550 votes over the past electoral cycle.

Her performance comes in one of Malta’s most competitive districts, where electoral dynamics shifted significantly compared to previous elections.

An economist by profession, Galea first entered Parliament in 2022 and became one of the youngest Labour MPs in the legislature.

Prior to her election, she had already attracted attention by securing over 1,000 first count votes as a first time candidate in District 1.

Alongside her parliamentary role, Galea has continued her career in the financial services sector. During the past legislature, she served in senior positions related to regulatory affairs and sustainability before being appointed Company Secretary in early 2026.

Throughout her time in Parliament, Galea also served on committees dealing with economic and financial affairs and represented Malta within the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

She was also involved in the implementation committee linked to Malta Vision 2050.

Galea is among six Labour Party women who have been elected to Parliament through Malta’s gender corrective mechanism following the conclusion of all casual elections.

The constitutional mechanism, introduced to improve gender balance in Parliament, allows additional seats to be allocated when either gender falls below 40 per cent representation in the House.

The six Labour women elected through the mechanism are Fleur Abela, Francesca Zarb, Romilda Zarb, Yana Borg Debono Grech, Deborah Schembri and Cressida Galea.

Her re-election follows a legislature during which she combined parliamentary responsibilities with a professional career in finance, while continuing to build support within the First District.
