Could A 4-day Work Week Become Possible Under Labour’s Flexible Work Reforms?

A four-day work week could soon be on the table in Malta, as proposals put forward by Robert Abela open the door for employees to work a full 40-hour week across fewer days.
Speaking during a mass Workers’ Day rally, the Prime Minister revealed that discussions with social partners will begin on granting workers the formal right to request flexible working arrangements.
Among the key proposals is the introduction of a compressed work week, allowing employees to complete their standard weekly hours in fewer days, potentially turning the traditional five-day schedule into a four-day one through longer daily shifts.
The reform forms part of a broader push to modernise workplaces and better align them with evolving lifestyles. Other measures under discussion include remote working and flexi-time, giving employees greater control over where and when they work.
Employers would be encouraged to consider such requests, with incentives aimed at supporting businesses that adopt more flexible practices. The goal is to strike a balance between productivity and employee well-being, while making workplaces more adaptable to today’s needs.
The announcement comes as the Labour Party ramps up its campaign ahead of the 30th May general election, placing workers’ rights and quality of life at the centre of its proposals.
