Cospicua Property To Be Transformed Into Cat Café

A public property in Cospicua is set to be transformed into a cat café after the Lands Authority signed a five-year agreement with the Cospicua Local Council for the use of the site.
The property, located in Triq it-Tlett Ibliet, covers around 1,571 square metres and will be developed into a space that serves both the local community and the cats living in the area.
Under the agreement, the Cospicua Local Council will manage the site, giving new purpose to the public property while creating an environment intended to benefit residents and provide suitable facilities for the area's free-roaming cats.
Minister for Housing and Lands Owen Bonnici said the agreement demonstrates the Government's continued collaboration with local councils to ensure public property is used in ways that directly benefit local communities.
He said giving public property a new purpose that responds to community needs helps ensure national resources are put to the best possible use.
Bonnici added that local councils are best placed to identify the needs of their residents and should continue receiving the support and resources required to carry out their work.
Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli highlighted the importance of ongoing cooperation between the Government and local councils to give public spaces new uses that directly benefit residents.
She said collaboration between the two is key to creating stronger communities with more accessible public spaces, adding that such partnerships allow projects to address the specific needs of each locality.
Cospicua Mayor Marco Agius said the project will give the site a new purpose while creating a welcoming environment for both residents and people who care for the area's street cats.
He described the cat café as another step in the council's efforts to improve community spaces and breathe new life into public properties that can benefit residents, adding that the project combines care for animals with the need for more accessible community spaces.
Permanent Secretary Ramon Deguara, Lands Authority Chief Executive Robert Vella and Cospicua Local Council Executive Secretary Crystal Degabriele also attended the signing of the agreement.
