Concerns Spread As European Parliament Invite Taliban For Immigration Talks

The European Parliament invited Taliban officials to Brussels for discussions regarding plans on deporting Afghan migrants who do not have a legal ground to remain in Europe.
The meeting reportedly took place yesterday on the 23rd of June, its time and location undisclosed. These talks with the Taliban are part of the European Union’s broader strategy in achieving stricter migration policy.
Many activists, NGOs, and even MEPs within the EU, such as Cecilia Strada and Saskia Bricmont, argue that engaging directly with Taliban representatives risks conferring a degree of legitimacy on a regime that continues to face widespread condemnation for its human rights record.
Critics warn that such dialogue could contribute to the gradual normalisation of Taliban rule despite ongoing reports of severe restrictions on women's rights, political freedoms, and civil liberties.
Questions have also been raised over whether the EU could offer financial incentives or assistance to facilitate the return of Afghan nationals, however no agreement on financial compensation has been publicly confirmed.
The European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) maintains that Afghanistan cannot currently be considered a safe country for returns.
The organisation cites persistent human rights violations, the lack of effective legal protections, and the continued risk of persecution faced by many returnees, arguing that deportations to Afghanistan would be inconsistent with international protection obligations.
