Compensation Scheme For July-August Power Cuts Announced

The Government has announced an ex gratia payment scheme for consumers affected by electricity supply interruptions during July and August 2026, following prolonged heatwaves and exceptionally high temperatures that placed significant pressure on Malta's electricity network.

The scheme provides financial support to residential consumers whose electricity supply was interrupted for a cumulative period of at least six hours during the two-month period.

Eligible households identified through Enemalta's systems will receive the payment automatically as a credit on their electricity bill, with no application required.

The payments are based on the total duration of electricity supply interruptions:

6 to 8 hours: €60

Over 8 to 12 hours: €70

Over 12 to 24 hours: €80

Over 24 to 36 hours: €90

Over 36 to 48 hours: €100

Over 48 hours: €110

The credit will appear on electricity bills under the description "Pagament ex gratia / Ex-Gratia Payment".

Residential consumers who believe they qualify but do not receive the payment automatically can apply through Enemalta's dedicated online portal between 1 October 2026 and 31 January 2027.

Non-residential consumers affected by the outages can apply for assistance through a separate Malta Enterprise online portal.

The Government said the scheme follows the electricity disruptions experienced during the summer months, when extreme temperatures and increased electricity demand affected the network. It added that Enemalta continues to invest in strengthening and modernising the national electricity distribution system to improve its resilience during periods of peak demand and severe weather.
