Comino Belongs To The People, Not To Those Who Take Over Public Space," Says Nationalist Party

The Nationalist Party has condemned footage showing Malta Tourism Authority officials ordering members of the public to leave an area at the Blue Lagoon in Comino, after activists alleged the space was being kept clear for commercial sunbeds.
The reaction follows the release of a video by Moviment Graffitti, which shows MTA officials instructing a group of friends to move from a rocky section of the public beach despite there being no sunbeds or umbrellas in the area.
The group claimed officials said the area was "not public" and threatened to call the police.
In a statement, the Nationalist Party described the incident as "unacceptable" and called on the Government to explain whether Comino remains accessible to the Maltese and Gozitan public or has become "someone's monopoly because they are close to power."
The Opposition said the incident reflected a wider pattern of governance that prioritises commercial interests over public access and environmental protection.
It accused the Labour Government of repeatedly failing to restore order at Comino and renewed its call for the publication of the island's carrying capacity study.
PN also demanded an immediate explanation from the responsible minister and the MTA on who authorised the removal, the legal basis for claiming the area was not public, and what measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents.
