Civil Protection Respond To Four Separate Drowning Incidents On Wednesday

On Wednesday, five casualties were involved in four separate drowning incidents around our islands.

Thankfully, none of the incidents resulted in a fatality.

The Mater Dei Hospital Emergency Department medical teams responded to these emergencies, assisted by the Civil Protection Department where required and, in some instances, by members of the public who also provided valuable assistance.

As weather conditions change, authorities emphasise that such incidents should serve as a clear warning of how quickly the sea can become dangerous.

‘Rough seas, strong currents and sudden changes in conditions should never be underestimated. This is particularly important for visitors to our islands who may not be familiar with our coastline, local sea conditions or the power of the Mediterranean Sea.’

So please make sure to check the weather and sea conditions before entering the water, avoid swimming in rough seas, never underestimate waves, currents or distance back to shore and to follow warning flags, signs and instructions from authorities and lifeguards.

Children are also to be kept under constant supervision. If anyone is spotted in need, one is to immediately call 112. No rescues are to be attempted by untrained civilians.
