Church Restoration Project Aims To Preserve Historic Dome And Bell Tower

Restoration works on a parish church dome and bell tower are set to begin, with authorities emphasising the importance of preserving Malta’s architectural heritage.
Addressing the project, Owen Bonnici, Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government, described the initiative as a significant step in safeguarding the church’s historic fabric through sensitive interventions that respect the building’s original character.
He said the works will help ensure the structure is preserved in the best possible condition for future generations.
Parish Archpriest Ivan Scicluna welcomed the investment, thanking authorities for their continued support in protecting this important heritage site.
The project will focus on the dome and its drum, which, despite being in generally good condition, show signs of deterioration due to prolonged exposure to the elements.
Studies identified open stone joints allowing water ingress, as well as biological deposits and surface damage.
Restoration works will include cleaning, stone repairs and repointing, alongside specialised treatments to prevent further decay.
The visit was also attended by Safi Mayor Johan Mula.
