Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Chris Fearne is in Antigua and Barbuda to participate in Commonwealth meetings, where Malta continues to make an active contribution towards strengthening international cooperation and diplomatic relations with countries from around the world.

As Chair of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG), Minister Fearne held a preparatory meeting with the Commonwealth Secretary-General, during which the organisation’s work and priorities for this week’s meetings were discussed.

The discussions focused on ways the Commonwealth can become more efficient and representative, including through proposals aimed at improving how the organisation operates. The report on the work carried out by the Ministerial Action Group over the past two years was also discussed, with Minister Fearne set to present it to Foreign Ministers and Commonwealth leaders.

Minister Fearne emphasised the importance of Malta’s active participation in the Commonwealth, which brings together 56 countries. He explained that the platform not only strengthens multilateralism but also provides important opportunities for Malta to build and deepen diplomatic relations with countries across different regions of the world.

Minister Fearne also held a bilateral meeting with Senator Adrian Thomas, Grenada’s Minister for Tourism, Creative Economy and Culture. During the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the foreign ministries of Malta and Grenada, aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

The agreement establishes a framework for practical cooperation, focusing on the exchange of experience and technical knowledge, diplomatic and consular training, professional development, as well as cooperation in foreign policy planning and multilateral diplomacy.

Through this agreement, Malta and Grenada will continue developing their collaboration through training, study visits and exchanges between their respective institutions, according to available priorities and resources.

These commitments reflect Malta’s efforts to further strengthen bilateral relations, expand diplomatic contacts beyond Europe and promote concrete cooperation through the Commonwealth.
