Chimpanzee Cries Heard Across Swieqi Rooftops, Partit Momentum Reports
Local

Partit Momentum has reported that residents in Swieqi have repeatedly heard a chimpanzee crying after it was allegedly kept in poor conditions in a cage on the rooftop of a property in the locality.

Partit Momentum reported that the situation has worsened due to recent gale force winds, with photos showing cladding being torn apart.

It said it had previously reported the alleged illegalities, which resulted in what it described as a €2 per day fine while the structure remained in place.

Partit Momentum stated that chimpanzees are highly intelligent and social wild animals that cannot thrive in confined or isolated environments. Partit Momentum reported that complaints to Animal Welfare were unsuccessful, claiming the response received was that the department deals only with domestic pets.

The party called for clarification on inspections carried out, whether registered animals were physically checked and whether documentation under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species was verified.

Partit Momentum also questioned how a licence could be issued if the structure was not regularised by the Planning Authority.

Katya Compagno, executive member of Partit Momentum, said authorities must assess both physical and psychological wellbeing. Partit Momentum proposed regulatory reforms, including a Positive List of permitted species, unannounced inspections and greater transparency in licensing. Partit Momentum said it will continue monitoring the case and urged authorities to act swiftly.
