Chef Letizia Calls Out Intimidation After Same-Day Cancellation Fee Refusal

Chef Letizia Vella took to social media to explain why her restaurant enforces a same day cancellation policy following an instance that resulted in an ‘unfair’ one-star review.
Writing as a restaurant owner, she says it is sometimes necessary to explain the realities of the industry, particularly when a situation feels “deeply unfair”.
She said that The Golden Fork Restaurant applies a deposit charge for same day cancellations, describing this as a common and reasonable practice.
When a reservation is confirmed, the restaurant commits tables, staff scheduling, food preparation and time. A last minute cancellation, she explained, directly affects the business’s ability to operate sustainably.
A customer cancelled a booking on the same day recently, but, as a goodwill gesture, the restaurant offered to move the reservation so that no deposit would be charged.
Although the guest initially agreed, they cancelled again and disputed the policy despite having already discussed it.
The situation escalated when a one star review appeared accusing the restaurant of having “no empathy”, followed by an email demanding a refund and threatening further action if the deposit was not returned.
“This is not feedback. This is not constructive criticism. This is intimidation.”
Chef Vella said that cancellation policies are not driven by greed but by fairness and survival in an industry marked by long hours, financial risk and rising costs.
While empathy matters, she argued it must be mutual and cannot involve threats or public pressure.
