The restoration of the Chapel of Santa Marija tal-Ħlas in Żejtun has been successfully completed.

Carried out under the local councils’ restoration scheme, the work was supervised and implemented by the Department of Restoration and Preservation, using its own workforce and resources.

Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, described the project as a clear example of how investment in historical heritage helps to safeguard the past while also strengthening local identity.

He said, “Chapels like Santa Marija tal-Ħlas are physical reminders of the faith, craftsmanship and dedication of the Maltese people across the centuries. Caring for them ensures that this cultural legacy is preserved for generations to come.”

Restoration began in February 2025, following planning approval, and was completed in September of the same year. The works included removing cement-based plaster from the stone surfaces, cleaning and repairing the facades, and repointing using appropriate materials.

Wooden apertures were restored, with damaged parts replaced and all features repainted. The rainwater system was also upgraded with traditional clay gutters to collect runoff from the roof, preventing damage to the facades.

Situated in the centre of Misraħ Santa Marija in Żejtun, the chapel is a site of significant cultural and historical importance.

It was originally the main church of the medieval village of Ħal Bisbut, also known as ir-Raħal ta’ Fuq. In the seventeenth century, it became associated with infant burials, earning it the name Chapel of Our Lady of Delivery.

The current building stands on the foundations of the 1575 chapel and was rebuilt in 1692, with the first stone laid by Bishop Davide Cocco Palmieri. In 1850, it was restored again by Rev. Giovanni Tabone, who also placed the relics of Saint Amabile beneath the altar.

The inauguration was attended by Żejtun Mayor Joan Agius, local council members and Archpriest Can. Anton Galea-Scannura.
