Carnival 2026 Programme Announced

The Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, together with Festivals Malta, has announced the national programme for the Malta Carnival 2026, one of the country’s most anticipated cultural celebrations.
The official Carnival dates will run from 13 to 17 February, with the main events taking place primarily in Valletta and Floriana, transforming the capital and its surroundings into a hub of colour, creativity and performance.
Minister Bonnici described the Maltese Carnival as a cornerstone of the national cultural calendar, highlighting its enduring role in uniting communities.
“The Maltese Carnival remains one of the most significant cultural events that brings people together, while strengthening traditions, creativity and our identity as a people,” he said. He added that the participation of 39 companies this year is clear evidence that the Carnival “continues to be vibrant and relevant”.
The Minister also underlined the nationwide reach of Carnival celebrations, noting that 50 local councils across Malta and Gozo will be organising a variety of Carnival-related activities.
These initiatives are being supported through funds allocated by the Local Government Division, ensuring that the festive spirit extends well beyond the main events in Valletta.
The programme for the central days of Carnival includes a series of traditional activities and performances, with the much-loved parade of floats once again taking centre stage in Valletta.
The parade will feature dance performances, colourful costumes, masks, artistic installations and other creative elements that reflect the craftsmanship and imagination of the participating companies.
Festivals Malta Chairman Aaron Zahra spoke about the scale and importance of the event, saying, “Carnival is a major festival that presents many organisational challenges.
Nevertheless, we are proud that it forms part of our portfolio, as it celebrates one of our oldest traditions while also being a festival that brings joy and unites Maltese and Gozitan families.” He also thanked employees and volunteers for their dedication in making the event possible.
Chief Executive Officer Frans Agius highlighted the collective effort behind the scenes. “Every year, the Maltese Carnival welcomes thousands of visitors from across Malta and Gozo, as well as from around the world,” he said, praising the largely voluntary work that ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
Beyond Valletta, the programme also includes the Ħamrun Carnival on Sunday 8 February from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m., and the Santa Venera Carnival by Night on Saturday 7 February.
Artistic Director Jason Busuttil noted that “the artistic standard has continued to rise”, encouraging the public to participate and enjoy what promises to be a large and colourful Carnival.
