CARITAS MALTA WELCOMES STRONGER ROAD SAFETY MEASURES BUT CALLS FOR BETTER ENFORCEMENT

Caritas Malta has welcomed Parliament’s recent unanimous approval of strengthened road safety measures, including the introduction of random roadside testing and stricter penalties for serious traffic offences. The organisation stated that such measures are an important step toward protecting the public and reducing the risks associated with driving under the influence.

Caritas Malta has long advocated for random testing and stronger enforcement as key tools to improve road safety. However, the organisation emphasised that legislation alone will not be sufficient unless it is accompanied by effective and visible enforcement to ensure that the new rules have a real impact.

At the same time, Caritas Malta expressed concern over what it described as the increasing normalisation of drug use in society. The organisation pointed to several issues that it believes contribute to this trend, including shops that continue to sell alcohol to minors and the promotion of cannabis products with low THC content.

Caritas Malta also highlighted the need for stronger enforcement of existing cannabis regulations, particularly laws that prohibit the use of cannabis in public places or in front of children. The organisation further warned about the availability of banned semi-synthetic cannabis products and edible items that remain on sale in stores accessible to the public, including minors.

The organisation stressed that effective laws, prevention initiatives, and consistent enforcement must work together to create a safer environment for families and the wider community.
