“Cannot Simply Be Swept Under The Rug”: Former PM Lawrence Gonzi ON Yorgen Fenech Trial

Former Prime Minister and former Nationalist Party Leader Lawrence Gonzi issued a statement on the Yorgen Fenech trial verdict and developments regarding the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

‘What our country has been through over the past few days cannot simply be swept under the carpet’, he wrote. ‘Whatever our political beliefs, no one can escape the serious consequences of what happened before, during and after the conclusion of Yorgen Fenech's trial.’

He said the facts that emerged should shock everyone, and that the ‘tarnishing of some of our country’s most important institutions has now been laid bare.’

‘Unless action is taken’, he said, ‘the damage done to our country’s credibility will be extremely difficult to repair.’

‘Our country continues to put the Caruana Galizia family through one ordeal after another. To this day, the authorities have failed to provide the Caruana Galizia family with the very minimum: justice for the premeditated assassination of Daphne. Instead, we are witnessing further insults, even from the authorities themselves and from people close to them.’

‘And the person, or persons, who were the hidden hand behind all this have, to this day, escaped justice.’

‘Five years and one month have passed, yet all the recommendations set out in the report are still waiting for the Government to take action and implement them. What is holding them back?’

He concluded by urging the changing of what needs to be changed, ‘if not out of respect for the Caruana Galizia family, then at least out of respect for our country.’
