Cancer Currently The Second Most Common Cause Of Death In EU

Cancer is currently the second-most common cause of death in the EU, with approximately one in two EU citizens expected to be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime.

According to rapporteur Vlad Voiculescu, cancer kills around 1.3 million Europeans every year, while 40% of those deaths are considered preventable.

“Europe's Beating Cancer Plan could save up to half a million lives each year,” he said, as MEPs backed a new report calling for stronger prevention, funding and more equal access to cancer care.

On Monday, MEPs on the European Parliament’s Committee on Public Health adopted the resolution by 27 votes to 8, with 5 abstentions.

They want the EU’s next long-term budget to dedicate at least €10.05 billion to health, including €2.5 billion specifically for cancer-related action.

Prevention is one of the biggest focuses.
