Calls For Stronger Enforcement Against Caravan Abuse Along Baħar Iċ-Ċagħaq Coast

The Naxxar mayor has called for stronger enforcement against what the local council describes as ongoing abuses by caravan owners along the Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq coast.
Mayor Christopher Deguara said public land was being taken over by caravans, furniture, planters and sofas, limiting access to an area that should be enjoyed by everyone.
In a video shared by the council, Deguara urged the authorities, police and LESA to inspect the site and address the situation.
He stressed that the criticism was not aimed at people who responsibly enjoy caravanning as a hobby, but at those who misuse public space and disregard existing rules.
The issue has caused tension for years. Although regulations introduced in 2023 require caravan owners to pay a daily fee and obtain approval for coastal parking during summer, Deguara said the council has little authority over permits or enforcement.
He argued that if councils cannot approve, reject or monitor permits, they should be issued directly by central government.
Meanwhile, a 2km family community trial hike has been called as a form of protest for the 11th of July 2026 between 8:30 and 10:30am to protest the ‘rampant abuse and illegalities’ taking over the coast.
‘The Bahar Ic Caghaq community will apply for a permit to have the designated costal area of the route free from any vehiclesand objects for the hikers to pass through.
‘Access of the road shall not be closed and cones will be placed on the edge of the road to ensure hikers safety.’
