Call Issued For Tenders For new Electricity Distribution Centre At Mater Dei
Local

The Foundation for Medical Services and Enemalta have issued a call for tenders for a new electricity distribution centre at Mater Dei Hospital, aimed at strengthening the hospital’s power supply and supporting future expansion.

The investment was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Ian Borg and Minister for Energy, the Environment and the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Miriam Dalli.

The new distribution centre will be built within the hospital grounds and will include new transformers, switchgear and control systems to reinforce Mater Dei’s existing electricity infrastructure, which has been in place since 2007. The project will also improve the hospital’s connection to the national grid through two additional 33kV feeders linked to Enemalta’s Kappara distribution centre.

The upgraded infrastructure is expected to increase reliability, improve standby power systems and provide greater redundancy to ensure uninterrupted service.

The additional capacity will support several planned developments at Mater Dei, including the new Medical Imaging Department building, the extension of the Emergency Department, new acute mental health wards and other future projects.

Ian Borg described the investment as essential for future-proofing Malta’s main hospital and meeting growing demand for healthcare services.

Miriam Dalli said reliable electricity is vital for essential services and added that the project forms part of wider efforts to modernise Malta’s electricity network and improve its resilience.

The call for tenders has now been published, with submissions closing on 1 December 2026.
