Call Issued For Construction Of New Hospital At San Vinċenz De Paul

At San Vinċenz de Paul Residence, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced the launch of a call for the development of a new 300-bed intermediate care hospital, the first of its kind in Malta.
The project marks an important step in strengthening the country’s healthcare system, with a focus on specialised care for older persons.
The Prime Minister explained that the tender represents the beginning of a wider vision to introduce a new level of healthcare provision.

He referred to a pilot project launched in 2024 with 16 beds, later expanded to 40 through the refurbishment of wards within the Rużar Briffa complex. Its success has led the Government to embark on a €1.3 billion investment in this sector.
He noted that healthcare investment now stands at around €1.7 billion annually, including €300 million dedicated to elderly care.
He also highlighted recent improvements at San Vinċenz, including the introduction of an MRI machine, alongside continued investment in infrastructure, technology and workforce conditions.
Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela explained that intermediate care was introduced to provide targeted treatment aimed at preventing deterioration in patients’ conditions. He said the new hospital will serve as a bridge between home care and acute hospital services for elderly patients.

Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing Malcolm Paul Agius Galea stated that the Government has a clear vision that places older persons at the centre of policy.

He added that the project is being designed to modern international standards and will complement existing services, including specialised teams that support recovery and help patients return to independent living.
