Cabinet Approves Transfer Of New Land To Male Basketball Association

The Malta Basketball Association is set to benefit from new facilities after the Cabinet approved the transfer of land next to the Ta’ Qali Sports Pavilion for the development of additional sports infrastructure.

The decision was announced by Prime Minister Robert Abela during a meeting at Castille with representatives from Malta’s national basketball teams, following a series of historic achievements in European competitions over recent weeks.

Together with Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri, Abela congratulated the athletes and technical staff behind the successes of the men’s and women’s national teams, which both won the European Championships for Small Countries.

Recognition was also given to the U18 girls’ and U16 teams, which secured victory in their respective Division C European Championships, as well as the U16 boys’ team, which finished as runners-up in their tournament.

The Prime Minister said these results demonstrated the importance of continued investment in sporting talent and infrastructure, adding that such achievements bring pride to Malta.

Abela said sport has been placed among the country’s priorities and that improvements in facilities have helped change attitudes towards sporting careers. He noted that investment has been made across different disciplines, including both widely practised sports and those with smaller participation levels.

The newly approved land transfer will allow the Malta Basketball Association to expand its facilities and create better opportunities for athletes to train and develop.

Abela said the Government’s aim is to continue supporting athletes who can compete successfully at an international level.

He added that sport remains a vehicle for promoting values such as integrity, discipline, commitment, sacrifice, and teamwork.
