Minister Jonathan Attard has announced that the ‘Buy a Sustainable Property’ scheme is returning for a second year, offering financial support to those purchasing eco-friendly homes.

Around €200,000 in grants was already given to first-year applicants.

The scheme provides grants of between €4,500 and €9,000, spread over three years, for people buying properties that meet high sustainability standards.

Homes purchased from 1 October 2025 onwards will qualify, with the scheme open until 30 September 2026.

Net Zero properties, which generate more energy than they use, will receive €3,000 a year, totalling €9,000 over three years.

Properties that are 20 per cent more energy efficient than European standards will get €1,500 per year, for a total of €4,500.

Minister Attard said the scheme encourages citizens to invest in energy-efficient buildings, helping lower energy bills while reducing environmental impact.

He explained that this initiative is part of a wider set of government actions to help more people become homeowners and support Malta’s Vision 2050 sustainability goals.

Perit Roderick Bonnici, Chief Executive Officer of the Building and Construction Authority, said that each application must include the final purchase contract and the property’s Energy Performance Certificate, showing the building as completed. Only one application is allowed per building and per person.

Also attending the press conference were BCA Board Chairman Perit Simon Saliba and Permanent Secretary Johan Galea.

For more details about the scheme, or to find out about other initiatives, the public can contact the Authority via the helpline 138.
