A building currently under the responsibility of the Lands Authority has been transferred to the Ħal Għaxaq Local Council, in full cooperation with the Housing Authority, under a lease agreement for a period of five years. The aim is for the building to be developed to serve as the Council’s new premises.

The hall is expected to host various courses and community services, including a facility where the public can pay bills without needing to travel to Żejtun, as well as a dedicated space for elderly residents, among other initiatives. The property is located at number 1, Triq il-Labour, Ħal Għaxaq, and covers just over 75 square metres.

The Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, said that this project is further confirmation of the Government’s trust in Local Councils. He explained that the transfer is being carried out through joint work between the Lands Authority and the Housing Authority, in order to provide the Local Council with a building for the benefit of residents.

Through this transfer, the Ħal Għaxaq Local Council will eventually have a larger, better and more accessible space from which to operate for the benefit of local families and residents. The Government remains committed to strengthening and supporting local councils so they can carry out their work in the interest of families and communities, he said.

Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue and Housing, Andy Ellul, said the decision will benefit Ħal Għaxaq residents, as it will provide a local centre offering services and facilities that previously required travel outside the village.

He said this clearly shows the Government’s commitment to supporting and investing in communities. He added that the council will be in a stronger position to continue its work, improve services, and increase its presence within the community.

Ħal Għaxaq Local Council Mayor Karl Boxall welcomed the announcement and said the project will be of great benefit to the community. He explained that the building will provide another space where residents can meet, attend activities and enjoy improved facilities, directly benefiting all residents.

The transfer was signed by Lands Authority Chief Executive Robert Vella, Housing Authority Chief Officer Romina Fenech, Ħal Għaxaq Local Council Mayor Karl Boxall, and Executive Secretary Fiona Cutajar.
