Budget 2027 Measures Could Worsen Inequalities For TCNs, Malta’s Equality Body Says

The National Commission for the Promotion of Equality (NCPE)says that the measures targeting third-country nationals introduced in Budget 2027 could increase inequality among vulnerable people.
As a result, they have called on the Government to carry out an Equality Impact Assessment before these changes take effect.
The commission warned that the proposed measures could worsen existing inequalities, particularly among vulnerable and minority groups.
In their statement, the NCPE says that measures imposing financial burdens on foreign workers could disproportionately affect those already facing difficulties.
The removal of free childcare, for instance, could particularly affect women. Meanwhile, higher fees for employment permits could make it harder for workers experiencing gender-based violence or racism to leave their jobs.
The NCPE urged the Government to assess the potential consequences before going forward with the proposals, to avoid making existing prejudices worse.
