Brejġu Garden In Żejtun Given New Life

Brejġu Garden in Żejtun has been given new life following an extensive regeneration project funded through a Local Government Division scheme.
The infrastructural works were carried out with an investment of €180,000 and included the creation of a new children’s area, the upgrading of existing spaces, and the planting of trees and shrubs to enhance the garden’s environment.

A new recreational area within the garden has been named after Dun Anġ Seychell, one of Żejtun’s most respected benefactors.
Dun Anġ was known for his lifelong dedication to helping vulnerable people and persons with disabilities, and his contribution to the community continues to be remembered. His legacy of generosity and service is now reflected in a space designed for public enjoyment.
During a visit to the site, Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government Owen Bonnici said that although Brejġu Garden is smaller than other public spaces, it holds significant value for the local community.
“Through serious planning and the effective use of available funds, the Local Council managed to implement a project that responds concretely to the needs of residents,” he said. The minister added that initiatives of this kind show how Local Councils can play an important role in improving public spaces and strengthening the social and environmental life of localities.
Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli highlighted the support being provided to councils through various schemes. She said the Local Government Division is offering “unprecedented financial support” for infrastructural projects and cultural initiatives.

“It is satisfying to see Local Councils taking the initiative to embellish their localities,” she said. “This project in Żejtun clearly shows how councils can make a difference in people’s lives, particularly in the lives of children, as this project is specifically aimed at them.”
Żejtun Mayor Joan Agius thanked the Ministry and the Parliamentary Secretariat for making the project possible. She said the garden was originally established in the 1980s and is named after Consiglio Ellul, known as Brejġu, an important figure in Żejtun’s history.
