A bolt failure may have contributed to the fatal climbing accident that claimed the life of Swiss climber Daniel Fransson in Żurrieq, according to a safety advisory issued by ClimbMT.

The climbing organisation said it inspected the Plunder route following the incident and identified a failure involving a large-eye stainless-steel belay bolt at the first belay. Fransson, 55, died while climbing in the Wied Fulija area earlier this month, while another person involved in the incident was rescued with injuries.

ClimbMT stressed that the exact cause of the failure has not yet been established and that the incident remains under investigation. The organisation has also contacted the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) to seek further independent examination of the failed hardware.

The route had been fully re-bolted using 316 stainless steel in 2014, with ClimbMT saying the failure is significant not only for Malta but also for climbers internationally, especially those using coastal routes.

The organisation warned that marine environments can pose risks to fixed climbing equipment, as corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking can weaken stainless-steel anchors, sometimes without visible signs of damage.

ClimbMT said it will now prioritise inspections of sea-cliff routes and other areas exposed to salt spray, humidity and harsh coastal conditions.

It is also coordinating with route equippers and the Malta Rock Climbing Club to gather information on potentially affected hardware.

The group urged climbers to exercise caution when using fixed equipment and reminded them: “Never rely on a single bolt as your only protection.”
