UPDATED:

The Malta Police Force has confirmed that the 13-year-old Polish girl who was swept out to sea in Ċirkewwa has been found dead, after her body was located trapped against rocks at the bottom of the sea.

The tragic discovery was made on Wednesday morning, following three days of intensive search efforts.

The searches began on Monday evening at around 6pm, when emergency assistance was requested after a father and his two children were dragged into the sea by a large wave during severe weather conditions. While the father and son managed to make it to safety, the girl was swept away by the rough sea.

Search operations were immediately launched by the Malta Police Force, Civil Protection Department and the Armed Forces of Malta, with divers, swimmers, drones and aerial assets deployed across multiple locations. The girl’s body was eventually recovered by divers, after being found lodged against rocks underwater.

The duty magistrate, Dr Monica Borg Galea LL.D, was informed and has opened an inquiry, while police investigations are ongoing.

Minister for Home Affairs Byron Camilleri later confirmed the news, expressing his sorrow and praising the relentless efforts of rescue workers, who carried out searches day and night in extremely challenging conditions.

He also confirmed that full assistance is being provided to the girl’s family through the Police Support Response Team, support which will continue during this difficult time.
