According to new information by VisitMalta, visitor numbers at the Blue Lagoon in Comino have dropped significantly this summer following the introduction of a new booking system aimed at improving sustainability and the visitor experience.

The highest concentration recorded in July and August was 3,830 visitors on Friday 22 August, a 68% decrease compared with peak figures in 2024, when numbers reached up to 12,000 at any one time.

On average, each of the three daily time slots introduced through the new system attracted 1,979 visitors. Out of 189 time slots in July and August, only 34 registered more than 3,000 people.

These figures suggest that the booking system, which sets a limit of 4,000 visitors at once, is successfully distributing crowds more evenly across the day.

The system was launched in May as part of wider measures coordinated by the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and Team Blue Lagoon.

Other actions included a 12% extension of the swimming zone, the creation of two new safe bathing areas, and the doubling of cleaning resources, with over 12 cleaners deployed daily.

Showers and toilets were refurbished, and waste is now removed more frequently to reduce environmental impact.

Maritime operations have also been reorganised under Transport Malta oversight, while new patrol teams, lifeguards, police and environmental monitors strengthened safety and enforcement.

Signage was installed to guide visitors along designated paths and protect the garigue.

According to the MTA, these results mark an encouraging first step in balancing environmental protection with a positive visitor experience.
