Blue Lagoon Rehabilitation Proposal Revealed

A comprehensive proposal has been unveiled for the rehabilitation of Comino’s Blue Lagoon, aimed at protecting its fragile ecosystems while enhancing the visitor experience.
The project, titled Blue Lagoon Rehabilitation: Balancing Nature and Experience, was presented by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg, alongside architect Jonathan Mizzi of Mizzi Studio, during a press conference organised by the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and Team Blue Lagoon.
Key elements of the plan include the removal of kiosks from the shoreline to make way for a 200-metre scenic walkway with improved accessibility, the restoration of 35,000 square metres of garigue habitats, and the relocation of vessel operations to safer docking areas away from swimming zones.
The swimming area will also be expanded by 5,600 square metres.
Existing degraded sites will be transformed into low-lying facilities providing information, seating, food and beverage services, waste management, and sanitation, while 840 square metres of green roofs will be planted.
Sustainable building materials, including natural limestone, reed, and locally engineered composites, will be used, and 880 square metres of concrete structures will be removed.
The proposal will now be submitted to planning and environmental authorities to begin the permitting process, which will include public consultation and further evaluation.
Mizzi Studio commented, “This holistic set of solutions aims to heal and protect Comino’s unique marine, terrestrial, and birdlife ecosystems while establishing respectful boundaries for visitors. By reorganising and upgrading facilities on existing disturbed land, these sensitive interventions allow us to live in harmony with nature while enriching the visitor experience.”
