The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and Team Blue Lagoon, in collaboration with Mizzi Studio, have submitted a Planning Application for the Blue Lagoon Rehabilitation Project in Comino.

The initiative aims to restore ecological balance and improve the visitor experience at one of Malta’s most popular Natura 2000 coastal sites.

The submission marks a stage in the ongoing process to manage the area more sustainably.

The proposal will now move through the full planning process, including consultation with the Environment and Resources Authority, the Planning Authority, and other stakeholders.

According to the MTA, Mizzi Studio, and Team Blue Lagoon, environmental specialists are being consulted to ensure that ecological considerations are incorporated into all phases of the project.

Plans outlined in the application include the removal of kiosks from the main shoreline to make way for a 200 metre scenic walkway with improved accessibility.

Approximately 35,000 square metres of garigue landscape are set to be restored and protected using rubble walls and other conservation methods.

Vessel operations would be relocated away from the swimming zone, which is expected to expand by around 5,600 square metres, or 20%

Degraded sites and existing buildings are proposed to be repurposed into low-lying visitor facilities, such as information points, seating areas, food and beverage outlets, sanitation services, and a managed waste collection area.

The plans also include 840 square metres of green roofs, the removal of 880 square metres of concrete structures, and the use of materials such as natural limestone, reed (qasab), and locally engineered composites.
