Blata L-Bajda Middle School Undergoes Major Transformation
An extensive refurbishment project is underway at Blata l-Bajda Middle School within St George Preca College, with the aim of transforming the campus into a modern, accessible educational environment designed around the needs of students and educators.
The project will be completed in phases and includes the refurbishment of the school's five blocks, along with new infrastructure, improved accessibility, upgraded sports facilities, redesigned outdoor areas and a modern hall. The school, which first opened in 1959, still contains substantial sections in their original condition and requires significant repair, modernisation and structural works.
During a visit to the school, Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri followed the progress of the first phase of works, while classes continue to take place within the same complex to ensure that the learning process is not interrupted.
Camilleri said the project forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure Malta's educational infrastructure continues to develop alongside the changing needs of students and educators.
The refurbishment includes the installation of air conditioning systems in classrooms and offices, the upgrading of electricity, water and drainage services, improved accessibility through lifts and other facilities, as well as new fire protection systems, CCTV, intruder alarms and central IT infrastructure.
Energy efficiency will also be improved through the installation of double-glazed windows and photovoltaic panels.
A key part of the project focuses on sport and wellbeing, with the refurbishment of the school's gym and gymnasium, alongside upgraded outdoor sports facilities. These spaces will serve not only students attending the school but also students from other schools and people taking part in evening courses.
The outdoor areas will also be redesigned to include spaces for outdoor learning and reading, shaded areas and green spaces. A new multipurpose hall will provide facilities for assemblies, exhibitions, educational activities and community events.
Ruben Briffa, Chief Engineer within the Directorate for Logistics and Infrastructure, said that works currently underway on Blocks A, D and E represent the first phase of a wider project to modernise the entire school complex.
He explained that the first phase includes replacing key services, installing modern infrastructure, building a new substation to eventually serve all five blocks, upgrading drainage and rainwater systems, and improving sports facilities, security systems and accessibility.
The project is being carried out in consultation with the school's leadership to ensure that the new facilities reflect the needs of students and educators. It forms part of the EDU Infrastructure Programme, a long-term initiative by the Ministry for Education and Sport to modernise educational infrastructure across Malta.
