Birżebbuġa’s Wied Dalam Restored Into New Space For Exploration

Visitors can now explore a newly restored section of Wied Dalam, which has opened as part of an enhanced experience at Għar Dalam and Museum in Birżebbuġa following an extensive restoration project by Heritage Malta.

The restored valley has been transformed into a space that showcases the connection between the famous prehistoric cave, its surrounding landscape and Malta's natural heritage.

Covering around 2,650 square metres, the project focused on restoring the valley's ecology while preserving its historical character.

Traditional rubble walls, recognised as protected national heritage, were carefully restored, invasive plant species were removed, and native plants grown from local stock were introduced. A new drip irrigation system has also been installed to help the vegetation establish itself, creating a more suitable habitat for native birds, reptiles and insects.

Accessibility has also been improved through the removal of hazardous debris and the creation of a safer visitor route.

New pathways bordered with loose rubble stones now guide visitors through the valley, while the site's historical and environmental significance has been carefully protected throughout the works. This included preserving 1950s NATO fuel pipes, which have been incorporated into the restored landscape as part of its industrial heritage.

Visitors can now enjoy wooden benches and an open-air library designed to encourage them to spend more time exploring the peaceful surroundings and learning about one of Malta's most significant prehistoric sites.

As part of the extended Għar Dalam experience, entry to Wied Dalam is free for children and seniors holding a Heritage Malta Student or Senior Passport, with admission also covering two accompanying adults. Heritage Malta said the initiative forms part of its ongoing commitment to making the islands' cultural and natural heritage more accessible.
