Public land in Birżebbuġa will be transformed into a new community garden following an agreement signed between the Lands Authority and the Birżebbuġa Local Council.

The agreement grants the Local Council use of land in Triq Santa Katarina, covering around 734 square metres, for a period of five years.

The space will be developed into a public garden equipped with swings and other facilities for residents to enjoy.

Minister for Housing and Lands Owen Bonnici said the agreement demonstrates the importance of cooperation between the Government and Local Councils to ensure public land is used in ways that provide the greatest benefit to communities.

He said that when public land is given a new purpose that responds to residents' needs, national resources are being used where they can have the biggest impact. Minister Bonnici added that Local Councils are best placed to understand the priorities of their communities and should continue receiving the support needed to carry out their work.

Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli said the agreement reflects ongoing efforts to provide Local Councils with more opportunities and resources to develop projects that address local needs.

Birżebbuġa Mayor Scott Camilleri explained that the new garden will be located in a central area of the locality, next to the Primary School, making it accessible to children and families. He thanked the Government for supporting the regeneration of public spaces and returning them to the community.

Through the agreement, the Birżebbuġa Local Council will be able to convert the unused space into a recreational area that will offer residents a place for relaxation and community activities.

The project is expected to contribute towards improving the quality and accessibility of public spaces within the locality.

Also present during the signing were Permanent Secretary Ramon Deguara, Lands Authority Chief Executive Officer Robert Vella and Birżebbuġa Local Council Executive Secretary Jordy Brincat.
