Work on the Birżebbuġa promenade has intensified in recent weeks, particularly around St George’s Bay, as part of a long-awaited regeneration project.

The development stretches from the Ferretti Battery in Qajjenza to the waterpolo pitch and aims to modernise a key coastal area for residents and visitors alike.

The first phase currently underway focuses on upgrading essential infrastructure, including drainage, electricity, water and telecommunications systems, many of which had been outdated for years.

Some of these works are expected to be completed by the end of June, when public access to St George’s Bay will reopen. Additional finishing works will continue throughout the summer, with the area remaining accessible.

Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia said the project is progressing as promised, adding that efforts are being made to minimise disruption.

Mayor Scott Camilleri welcomed the works, noting they address longstanding issues affecting sustainability.

The second phase will include paving with porphyry stone and quay refurbishment. Meanwhile, restoration works at Wied il-Buni, damaged by Storm Harry, have also been carried out, ensuring improved safety and durability along the promenade.
