Birgufest Returns: Candlelit Streets To Light Up The Historic City

Birgu’s streets will once again be illuminated by thousands of candles this weekend as the annual Birgufest returns, with the highlight being the ‘Birgu by Candlelight’ event on Saturday evening.
The two-day festival runs from Friday, 10 October, to Saturday, 11 October, culminating on Saturday night when around 20,000 candles will light up the historic streets, alleys, and staircases of Birgu.

The Friday evening programme features concerts by Stream, The Alchemists, and Xarulu, while on Saturday, in addition to the candlelit streets, all churches, Fort St. Angelo, and the Inquisitor’s Palace will be open to the public.
Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli said,“Through this activity, the Local Council continues to highlight the rich history and charm of Birgu. These events, supported financially by the Local Government Division, are growing in both popularity and quality each year.”
Mayor of Birgu, John Boxall said “This event attracts thousands of visitors and helps express Birgu’s identity in a more open way. This year, the regenerated Birgu Square will further complement the festival, with a variety of activities taking place there.”
Boxall also noted that the Local Council has distributed candles to residents to encourage community participation and invited the public to enjoy the festivities.
To accommodate the festival, ferry services between the Cottonera and Birgu will be extended until 2:00am on both Friday and Saturday nights, and the local bus service from Birgu will also run until 2:00am.
