Birgu will once again be transformed into a sea of candlelight as around 45,000 candles illuminate the historic city during Birgu by Candlelight, the main attraction of Birgufest 2026.

Taking place on 9 and 10 October, this year’s edition marks the 19th edition of Birgufest, an event that has become a key fixture on Malta’s cultural calendar and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The highlight of the festival will take place on Saturday 10 October, when Birgu’s streets will be lit by the glow of thousands of candles as traditional street lighting is switched off. The candlelit atmosphere will bring a unique character to the city’s historic streets, creating an evening dedicated to culture, heritage and community.

The programme for Birgufest 2026 was announced during the official launch of the event, attended by Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli, Birgu Mayor John Boxall, representatives of the Birgu Local Council and the organisers.

Minister Zerafa Civelli said the Government will continue supporting initiatives that strengthen Local Councils, promote Malta’s cultural heritage and give communities opportunities to celebrate their identity. She said events such as Birgufest highlight the importance of cooperation between the Government, Local Councils, residents and voluntary organisations.

Mayor John Boxall thanked the Local Government Division and the Malta Tourism Authority for their support in helping Birgufest continue growing as an event that attracts thousands of people to Birgu.

The two-day programme will feature a wide range of activities, including live music in different areas of the city, historical re-enactments, open museums, church concerts, a short film festival, art exhibitions, traditional decorations, local food and more.

The festival begins at 8:00pm on Friday 9 October and at 5:00pm on Saturday 10 October. Friday’s programme will include a free concert by The Travellers at 10:00pm, while Saturday will feature ‘Tnemnim’, a series of three concerts organised by the Port Regional Council.

Visitors will also be able to explore the Artisan Market at Couvre Porte, where local craftspeople will showcase and sell handmade products.

To make access easier, special public transport arrangements will be available on Saturday, including extended services on routes 4 and 2, a shuttle service from Lourdes Bus Stop in Paola, and a ferry service between Birgu and Valletta operating until 1:00am.
