The Għaqda Piroteknika 10 ta’ Awwissu Birgu has appealed for public support after revealing that preparations for the Feast of St Lawrence suffered a major setback following the recent explosion at the Madonna ta’ Lourdes fireworks factory.

In an official statement, the association expressed its solidarity with the pyrotechnicians and all those affected by the incident, acknowledging the dedication and sacrifices made by those involved in the production of fireworks displays throughout the festa season.

The association explained that the entire “kaxxa tal-ħruġ” display, together with all accompanying fireworks intended for the traditional spectacle marking the departure of the statue of St Lawrence on 10 August, was being prepared at the factory and was lost in the explosion.

Following the incident, the association immediately began discussions with other pyrotechnicians to explore replacement options. However, with several other feasts also affected, available alternatives were limited and significantly more expensive.

Despite the challenges, the association said it remains committed to delivering a fitting tribute to its patron saint and has urged supporters to assist through donations and participation in upcoming fundraising activities ahead of Festa 2026.
