Bernard Grech Calls For New Council Election In Ħal Għargħur
Local

Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Bernard Grech has called for a fresh election in the Ħal Għargħur Local Council, accusing the Partit Laburista of making every effort “to snatch power from the people.”

Addressing a Rally for Democracy in Ħal Għargħur, Grech insisted that only a re-election would restore legitimacy to the council, stressing that the people, not political manoeuvring, should decide who governs them.

Grech criticised Prime Minister Robert Abela, claiming he is undermining democracy by allowing the removal of PN councillor Helen Gauci, who received more votes than the three councillors who voted her out.

He described this move as an attempt to artificially boost Labour’s local council numbers.

The Leader of the Opposition further accused the Government of neglecting key national issues such as the rising cost of living and business support, while interfering with judicial matters in high-profile cases involving Labour figures.

Grech underlined the PN’s commitment to democracy and said the rally was an act of solidarity with the residents of Ħal Għargħur.

Other speakers included Mosta councillor Michaela Ann Bayliss and Iklin Mayor Dorian Sciberras, who both reiterated the PN’s determination to protect democratic values and seek justice in the council dispute.

During the event, Iklin Mayor Dorian Sciberras confirmed that PN mayors and representatives from the Eastern Region had submitted a motion calling for the Region to urgently address the situation in Ħal Għargħur.
