BCRS Malta, the licensed operator of Malta’s national Beverage Container Refund Scheme, has reported strong collection performance throughout 2025, despite an increase in the number of beverage containers placed on the market.

Year-end figures show that containers placed on the market increased from 236.3 million in 2024 to 242.3 million in 2025. During the same period, total collection by weight rose from 10,795.8 tonnes to 10,965 tonnes, while the overall collection rate improved from 82.8% to 84.5%.

The results indicate that the scheme maintained and slightly improved its performance despite higher volumes entering the market.

BCRS Malta said this reflects continued participation from consumers, businesses and other stakeholders involved in the scheme.

Almost 11,000 tonnes of beverage container material were processed for recycling during 2025, highlighting the environmental contribution of the scheme and the importance of returning eligible containers through official collection channels.

To improve accessibility, BCRS Malta continued expanding its collection network with the addition of the Salini Depot, Balzan Hub, Kordin Hub, Xlendi Hub and Xgħajra Hub. These new locations aim to make container returns more convenient for communities across Malta and Gozo.

The organisation also funded service improvements managed operationally by the Cleansing and Maintenance Division. Attendants, who were previously stationed only at depots, are now also present at 11 of the busiest Reverse Vending Machine locations to support smoother operations and reduce downtime.

BCRS Malta also continues to fund a door-to-door collection service for persons aged 60 and over and persons with disabilities. The service, initially launched as a pilot project, has since expanded following positive public response.

BCRS Malta Chief Executive Officer Alexander Galea said the results demonstrate that the scheme has remained stable while handling increased volumes.

He thanked consumers, retailers, producers, importers and other stakeholders for their continued cooperation, adding that the organisation will continue working to improve accessibility and recycling efforts across Malta and Gozo.
