The Public Works Department is set to begin an ambitious regeneration project in Baħrija Square, Rabat, backed by an investment of €1.3 million across an area of around 2,400 square metres.

The initiative aims to revitalise this central space for the Baħrija community, improving both its appearance and functionality while making it more accessible and welcoming.

The project will transform the square from a space with limited use into a more open, organised and safe environment.

Once completed, it will serve as a focal point for residents, families and visitors, contributing to a better quality of life for those who live nearby and those who regularly use the area.

Works will include upgrades to infrastructure around the Church, introducing more efficient services that meet current needs.

A significant landscaping programme is also planned, involving the removal of overgrown vegetation and the planting of additional trees and greenery to create a more natural and visually appealing setting.

A key component of the project is the development of a new parking facility to replace the existing one.

This will be better structured, more accessible and designed with safety and convenience in mind. New architectural lighting will also be installed to enhance the square’s character, improve its evening ambience and increase security.

In addition, a reservoir will be constructed to support improved water storage and sustainability, alongside the installation of new fountains to further enhance the space.

Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia said the project fulfils a commitment to provide the community with a regenerated public space, adding that works will begin in the coming weeks.

Rabat Mayor Sandro Craus highlighted the transformation of the area into a pedestrian-friendly square, while thanking the authorities for delivering on the vision.

The rector of Baħrija Church, Fr Ray Francalanza, welcomed the project, noting that it will provide the community with a place to gather and will enhance the area’s character.

Overall, the project aims to give Baħrija Square a renewed identity while preserving its traditional importance.
