August Is Over In Malta… Here’s What That Actually Means

August is officially over, which in Malta somehow means both nothing and everything at the same time.

Technically, summer is still here. The sun is still intense, beaches remain busy and cars left in the sun still feel like ovens after only a few minutes. But September has arrived, bringing with it a familiar change in the rhythm of everyday life.

The first sign is that everyone suddenly remembers they have a job. After weeks of out-of-office replies, quieter offices and meetings delayed because someone is away, Malta slowly returns to its usual pace.

Traffic also makes its annual comeback. The calm August roads disappear as schools reopen, workplaces fill up again and the morning rush returns. That relaxed 15-minute drive quickly becomes a distant memory.

The weather, however, refuses to move on. September in Malta is still very much summer, with temperatures often remaining high and the heat continuing well into the month.

Yet somewhere, someone has already started talking about autumn, and you may even spot the first person wearing jeans.

The festas begin to wind down, village streets become quieter and attention slowly turns towards the final months of the year.

And then comes the familiar realisation: “Summer flew.” This is despite the fact that many have been counting down the days until cooler weather since May.

So yes, August is over. The holidays are ending, traffic is returning and emails are piling up. But this is Malta, and summer still has plenty of time left.
