ASA Addresses Water Polo Betting Allegations Involving Coach & Players

The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) has reaffirmed its firm stance on integrity following recent media reports alleging betting related issues involving water polo players and a coach.
In a statement, the ASA said it “treats any matter concerning the integrity of sport with the utmost seriousness” and maintains a “zero-tolerance policy toward any breaches of integrity, including betting-related misconduct.”
It also clarified that the coach referenced in reports is not a Malta national team coach.
The ASA said it has formally requested access to a report held by the Malta Gaming Authority, noting that it has had to initiate legal procedures to obtain it.
It explained that “due to the absence, until recently, of an established formal legal channel,” it is working to secure the report through the appropriate processes now being put in place via its Integrity Officer.
The association stated that it “is not in a position to take disciplinary action” until the report is received, adding that it would not be appropriate to prejudge any individuals involved.
It emphasised “the importance of due process and the protection of the rights of all parties concerned.”
The ASA added that once the report is lawfully obtained, it will “act without delay” and take any measures deemed necessary in line with its regulations and international standards.
It also said it remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of aquatic sports and will continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities while calling for responsible reporting during the ongoing process.
