Around 8,600 educators have returned to State schools as the 2025/26 academic year begins.

Students from Year 1 of primary through to Year 11 of secondary will start lessons on Wednesday 24 September, while kindergarten children will return in the following days.

Education Minister Clifton Grima visited St Thomas More College Secondary School in Żejtun to welcome staff on their first day back.

He noted that after weeks of preparation, teachers were finalising their work before the arrival of students.

The Minister underlined the government’s commitment to providing the best for children by strengthening school infrastructure, motivating staff, and ensuring the highest standards of education across Malta and Gozo.

Żejtun Secondary currently has 205 educators supporting around 1,000 students. The government has highlighted its ongoing efforts to place teachers at the centre of education policy.

This includes a collective agreement that improved salaries, while also seeking to raise quality and dedication in classrooms.

Over the summer, more than €6 million was invested in school renovations across the country.

The Ministry is also introducing a €54 million laptop scheme for Year 7 students, co-financed through national and EU funds, aimed at creating a more inclusive and innovative digital learning environment.
