During her parliament speech yesterday, Minister for the Environment, Energy & Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Miriam Dalli announced that around 60,000 trees were planted during this legislature.

Minister Dalli also revealed that through a new Project Green scheme, the public can apply for over 70,000 additional trees to be planted on private land.

‘Anyone with space is encouraged to join’, said the Minister, saying that this forms part of a wider strategy to create more open spaces close to where people live.

The work focuses on; creating new parks on land that could have been developed; regenerating abandoned or forgotten spaces and; improving the upkeep of existing green areas.

Dalli pointed to recent and ongoing projects across Malta and Gozo, including green spaces in Pembroke, Santa Luċija, Marsaskala, Bengħajsa, the Qajjenza community garden, Wied Inċita, Spencer Gardens in Marsa, and the major works underway in Miżieb and l-Aħrax.

Schools are also getting new green areas, with 35 schools set for gardens and nature learning spaces, she said.

‘Large capital projects are in progress too, including the new €37 million park in Wied il-Għajn, and a new park at the former American University site, with parking placed underground to prioritise green space above.’
