Around 3,200 Women To Get Pension For First Time, Minister Says

Around 3,200 women are expected to qualify for a pension for the first time through a new social security contribution transfer scheme announced in Budget 2027, according to Minister for Social Policy and the Family Michael Falzon.
Speaking at a press conference, Falzon described Budget 2027 as a strong social budget that continues the Government's commitment to supporting pensioners, families, persons with disabilities and vulnerable people.
He said the measures build on the approach adopted since 2013 and demonstrate the Government's commitment to delivering on its promises.
The Minister also highlighted a €10 weekly increase for pensioners from January 2027, including the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). The Government has also reaffirmed its commitment to increasing pensions by a total of €50 per week over the current legislature. In addition, the annual tax-free pension income threshold will increase by €520 to €37,624.
Falzon described the social security contribution transfer scheme as a major reform, supported by a €13 million investment. The scheme will allow eligible spouses, civil union partners and registered cohabiting partners to transfer up to 260 social security contributions, equivalent to five years, to help individuals meet the requirements needed to qualify for a pension.
Those who still do not qualify for a pension will have the transferred contributions counted towards the Deficiency Contributory Bonus.
The Government also confirmed that it will complete the introduction of full widows' pensions, with more than 7,000 widows set to receive another increase. Widows receiving a pension will also be able to transfer contributions to strengthen their pension entitlement.
